Finally. I’ve been secretly waiting for cellphones to be linked with causing cancer. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been suspicious of the possibility. Now it’s in the news.
I was really surprised to find this on the front page of AT&T. I mean, I usually check out Google News for health stuff, but this was right on the front page when I opened my browser! It looks like a guy in Italy sued a cellphone company for causing his brain tumor. He won.
What the Court Case Means
Well, you might be thinking: Who cares it’s law not medicine. You’re right, but also not really. Legal precedent has the same effect. Ironically, it actually has even more weight! For example, scientists found that smoking causes lung cancer. But cigarettes aren’t banned yet in the U.S..
But now that cellphones are legally found to cause brain cancer, it opens the possibility for courts to legally ban or limit cellphone usage – which everyone has to follow, because it’s the law. The legal precedent gives courts more authority to regulate cellphone usage and protect consumers from cellphones’ possible dangers.
In fact, one consumer protection group is already filing a suit against all cellphone companies to require them to put warning labels about brain cancer risks from daily cellphone use.
Okay, But Do Cellphones Really Cause Brain Cancer?
The short answer is yes, if you use them for long enough. The man who filed suit used his cellphone for work – 3 hours per day for 15 years. That’s in line with a few studies finding that heavy cellphone users, who talk on the phone for longer than an hour a day, have a higher risk for brain cancer. There’s also a study with rats from last year finding that heavy cellphone radiation exposure causes heart and brain cancer.
But for the most part, the majority of studies find that if you only talk on the phone for an hour everyday, you don’t have an increased risk of brain cancer. But if you have a significant other, and you’re in high school, are you really only talking on your cell for an hour everyday?
And Cellphones Kill Sperm
But doctors did find with certainty that if you’re a guy and you keep your cellphone in your pocket, it’s killing your sperm! Also, if you talk on the phone for longer than an hour, it kills your sperm too. Sucks, right?
They did a study and found a correlation between decreased sperm counts and decreased semen quality with guys who use their cellphone a lot or keep it close to their groin.
What Should You Do About Your Cellphone?
I’m pretty sure none of us can go without our selfie tech. I couldn’t! So now that you’re aware of its brain cancer-causing dangers, you can easily avoid most of the risk.
All you need to do is use a headset when talking on your cell. And if you’re a guy, just never keep your cellphone next to you. Don’t sleep with it in bed – don’t put it in your pants.
If you treat your cell like a hazmat object, I’m sure you won’t have to worry about any increased brain cancer risk.
