California Does It Again! This State Is Probably One of My Favorites

California’s always there to stand up for what’s right (most times at least). Now they’re going after cigarettes, the cause of so much misery.

This is probably something you already know – but like, doctors are saying 90 percent of lung cancer is caused by smoking. That’s pretty much all lung cancer! How can cigarettes even be legal, right? But, sadly, they are – mostly because of smokers who can’t kick the habit lobbying to die of lung cancer I guess.

California’s New Cigarette Tax Is Probably the Only Tax I Can Clap To

Well, California’s not taking that crap. They want people in their states to live and not die from a cancer that’s completely preventable. While they can’t just yet outlaw cigarettes outright, they’re trying to make it super hard for people to get them!

Now they’re imposing a $2 tax on every cigarette carton sold. For some people that brings their monthly smoking costs to $100 more. (That’s not all they did – last year they made buying cigarettes illegal unless you’re 21! Go Cali! Go!)

I guess the tax works both ways, but only for a short while. There are people who just want to pollute their bodies with carcinogens, so they’re actually buying reserves of cancer sticks before the tax takes full effect. Like – why?

But then there are people who actually swear to quit because of the tax and are thankful it’s being enacted because it’s what they needed to get them to stop their dangerous cancer-causing habit.

But over time more and more people are sure to either quit smoking in Cali or move themselves out of the state to keep up their bad habit. Now – if you actually move just to risk getting cancer, that’s pretty sad.

I Shouldn’t Really Be So Mean

Well, yay for Cali! I guess I’m being a little selfish (if not wanting people to get a preventable cancer is selfish?) or something. I haven’t ever smoked – not even one stick for experimentation purposes. My dad and mom used to smoke, and I hated the second hand smoke drama. For that reason alone I didn’t smoke. And I’m pretty blessed not to have been peer pressured into smoking because no one at school was like that.

What I’m trying to say is that I have no idea how hard it is to quit smoking. Is it like quitting chocolate? I know when I tried losing weight how hard it is to avoid the fast and not-so-fast-but-fatty foods I enjoyed. It’s not so much I craved them – but like, I got into a routine, you know?

I mean, it’s like, if everyday I have X,Y,Z foods for breakfast – changing it up just felt like too much effort. Oh, and then came the cravings. So yeah – if quitting smoking is harder than that then maybe I shouldn’t be so mean.

But then again – I don’t want you to get cancer either. So, I’m going to keep being mean about smoking.
