My Faith in Humanity Restored by IHOP Employee

Are humans inherently bad? That’s what’s been going through my mind – but this story changed my mind!

Oh my! This week I was kinda feeling weird about people, in general. I mean, you have the world cheering because Trump bombed and drone killed innocent civilians (and terrorists of course). Then there’s the daily news about crimes, rapes, and murders. I mean, you even have kids killing kids.

I was pretty much starting to wonder if people are people or if they’re how that popular saying goes – inherently evil. Kinda felt bad about it. Is it that everyone is just out for their own personal gain – the corruption, the political games – it seems like everyone just cares about themselves even if they have to kill to get what they want.

IHOP Server Changes My Mind About People!

But then I read an article from USA Today that perked me up and I literally sighed contently. So get this – there’s this lovely couple that goes to IHOP like everyday. But the wife has Huntington’s Disease – which is one of the saddest diseases on earth. There’s like no cure and you progressively lose your physical, mental, and social abilities because your brain cells are slowly dying one by one.

It’s really sad! It’s like slowly becoming more and more paralyzed while at the same time losing your mental processes. I can only imagine how hard it is for the husband to watch his wife deteriorate.

But what does that wonderful man do? Every single day they’re at IHOP he doesn’t eat his food with his wife. He lets his delicious meal go cold because he patiently helps his wife eat all of hers first. And if you’re guilty of going to IHOP at least once – you know it’s best eaten warm! In fact, it’s kinda hard to resist digging in when the server sets it down – the aroma, the warmth – you’re a forkful in before you even realize!

But everyday the loving husband makes this steadfast sacrifice for his wife! But it’s not this part that warmed my heart. It’s what their regular server does.

I guess there’s this one server who somehow or other ended up serving the couple every time they ate at the IHOP. His name is Joe Thomas – and he’s a saint too. He saw the husband’s sacrifice and one day decided to sit down next to them and help the wife with her breakfast. He wouldn’t let the husband let his food go cold anymore – he kept doing it every single time they came in. Now the couple can enjoy their meal together! It’s so touching – well, at least for me.

But Let’s Think Like a Scientist

Okay, so it’s totally awesome that both the husband and the server were so selfless – I mean, you would clap your hands if you saw them. But the cynic in me can’t help but doubt. And so I looked it up and it turns out that scientists say that when we help people we actually get rewarded – biochemically.

They found that when we act generous or loving towards others, like you know – hugging or something – our brains release oxycontin (YOU KNOW, THAT DRUG THAT WE LEARNED IS BAD IN HEALTH CLASS?)

I’m not saying that Joe or the husband are helping the wife for the oxycontin reward – but maybe part of their motivation is the drug reward. Still, what they do is awesome – there’s no denying that! But that kind of makes you wonder how many people are being charitable, selfless, and generous because they truly are selfless – and how many are doing it for the oxycontin fix?

Either way, you should be charitable, selfless, and always giving to others when you can. Oxycontin (the natural kind, and not the illegal kind you take in pill form) is pretty good for your body – it lowers stress, blood pressure, and pretty much keeps your body healthy. So even if you don’t like helping others, do it because it helps you live longer.
